Honestly, who would have thought that so much work would need to go into getting people to come to your wedding? Gone are the days of going down to the local Pick ‘n Pay and selecting a colourful, single sheet, tear-off invite. Now the effort of putting together ‘the invitation’ comes a close second to the mission of finalizing a guest list. Man, I miss being 10 years old. With the amount of paper I’ve been made to look at over the past few months, I can’t help but wonder just how many trees could have been saved, were we to simply invite people through Facebook. Kirsty has unfortunately forbidden me to consider this as an option.
My problem is that I want something that is different to the norm. I’m not talking about combining turquoise leopard print with a bright orange backdrop - I do realize this may look a little hideous. Wouldn’t it be awesome, though, if we were able to put together a digital invitation that self-destructs after being read (on a budget of R5 per item, of course). I have been informed, however, that this James-Bond-meets-Mission-Impossible style of invite may not work well with the overall theme of our wedding. Still, the thought of going the good old paper fold-over route does make me yawn a little…
Saturdays are no longer for relaxing. Oh no, these days I find myself getting up at the crack of dawn to look at many different sheets of paper that (I personally feel) could all do the job equally well, and that look exactly the same as the many sheets of paper we viewed the week before. Needless to say, I am overjoyed that Kirsty has finally settled on a selection of paper that she wants to use.
Despite this, however, my Saturdays are not looking any better. Now that we have all the components of the invites, the business of putting them together into something that we would want our guests to receive still lies ahead. I can’t say that I’m looking forward to a production line of gluing, folding and ribbon-tying.
Despite my ranting and raving, though, I suppose Kirsty has really done an amazing job in getting this whole lot sorted out. She has such an eye for this kind of thing! And once all the invites are ready to go out, I’ll be really proud to give them to our friends and family, knowing that all this effort has gone into creating them.
It’s getting close now - just a month and a half to go - and yet, still so many deadlines to meet…
