Spring - the season that not only heralds the return of warmer weather, but also the amazing rebirth in our gardens - has finally arrived, and what better time to focus on greenery and weddings.

It is encouraging that worldwide a definite trend is emerging among more environmentally-conscious couples, who wish to find ways of ensuring that their nuptials are kinder to the planet. On this subject, we are very excited to tell you about the launch of Celebration House's Green Initiative (see below).

Wedding Trees
It all started after I read a fascinating article about a town in the Philippines, where couples were unable to obtain permission to marry until they had planted five trees. The town authorities were concerned about the deforestation in their country and wanted to do something positive about it, so they came up with this unusual concept. Interestingly, the idea has been such a huge success that to date thousands of trees have been planted by couples in this town.

While I have no intention of working towards a law forbidding people to marry unless they plant trees, I thought that the idea of encouraging couples to plant a tree to commemorate their marriage was an excellent one, so I approached Stodels Nurseries with the concept, as a result of which we have just launched our exciting new Green Initiative with them.

We are delighted that Stodels have agreed to offer all couples a generous 30% discount on their purchase of an indigenous tree. To qualify, you will need to produce a discount voucher, which will be available only from Celebration House. On our new website, www.weddingtree.co.za, you will find lots of useful hints and tips on planting a tree, provided by Stodels.

Couples who plant trees to commemorate their weddings are encouraged to send us photos of the event, as we would love to share these with others on the Wedding Tree website. Where you plant the tree is your choice - you can plant it in your new garden, at your parents' home, at a school you attended, or in a public space that needs beautifying. It will be fun to watch the tree grow (like your marriage), and as a permanent reminder of your special occasion. At the same time, you will be doing your bit to 'green' the planet.

The Numbers Game
Across the globe, from Australia to Russia and San Francisco to Scotland, thousands of couples chose to marry on what the Chinese regard as the most fortuitous wedding date - 08/08/08.

As we all know now, their country certainly excelled at the recent Olympics by winning a record number of gold medals, but another area in which they also set a record was for the number of Chinese couples who decided to tie the knot on 08/08/08 - the day of the opening of the Olympics.
The number eight has always been regarded as an extremely lucky one in China (which is why August is by far the most popular month for weddings there), but even by Chinese standards, an incredible 314 224 weddings on that one day was a remarkable record for this country! In Beijing alone, as host city of the Olympics, 15 646 chose to marry on this date (23 times the normal daily average).

This month's best question
Q. How long before my wedding should I send out my wedding invitations?

A. It is advisable to send out your invitations six to eight weeks before the event. If you plan to marry over the festive season, ten weeks in advance would be advisable. At busy times of the year, such as during December or over Easter, it's also a good idea to send out a 'Save the Date' notification even further ahead, to enable family and friends travelling from afar to book flights well in advance.

Children at weddings
I received an interesting e-mail from a bride regarding children at weddings. As she comes from a large family, she could not afford to include all the children in her guest list. She explained this to the parents and told them that if they wanted their children to accompany them to the wedding they were most welcome to do so, but they would have to pay for them. In this way she kept everyone happy, as many took her up on her offer. If you would like to share your thoughts on children at weddings with others, please send us an e-mail, as we would love to hear from you.
