Greetings!
Spring - the time of year that heralds the start of the wedding season in Cape Town...
Green Weddings
Last month is also known as ‘Arbor Month’, which means now is a good time to think of ways in which we can contribute to greening the planet. Why not plant a tree to commemorate your wedding day? Visit www.weddingtree.co.za to find out more.
The National Wedding Show, London
Celebration House will once again be taking part in The National Wedding Show being held in London from 2nd – 4th October 2009. This will be the eighth time we will be exhibiting at this Show, where we plan to promote Cape Town and South Africa as the ideal choice for destination weddings. If you (or someone you know), will be in London during that weekend, please visit us at the Show (Stand E55), where we will be handing out copies of our full colour publication, Under African Skies - a guide to weddings and honeymoons in South Africa. Copies will also be available from the Savanna group of shops in London, as well as at Africa Travel and SA Tourism London.
This month's interesting question
Q. Should the number of bridesmaids be the same as the number of best/groomsmen? We have three or four bridesmaids and two best men in mind.
A. There are no rules as to how many bridesmaids and best/groomsmen you can have at your wedding. You can have as many as you like, or even none! However, having said that, it is important to think about how the attendants will walk down the aisle after the ceremony, as it is traditional for the bridesmaids to be escorted by one of the groom’s attendants, and for them to share the dance floor with the newly-weds. An imbalance in numbers might also be noticeable in your wedding photos.
A word of caution!
Last New Year on the Sea Point beachfront, I witnessed a couple sending off an Asian-style paper balloon/lantern containing a candle. I had never seen one of these before and was a little horrified watching it take off, as it looked extremely dangerous and I was concerned about where it might land. I have since found out that they are called ‘sky fire lanterns’ and have been banned in certain countries. One German couple discovered just how dangerous they are when, on their wedding day, they sent off a number of these lanterns, only to have one of them ignite and land on the roof over a terrace, setting it on fire. The flames quickly spread to the house next door. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, but the unfortunate couple had to start their married life faced with a bill of around a quarter of a million euros, for water and smoke damage!
Win-A-Wedding Competition
On a beautiful, sunny winter's day, our winning couple exchanged their vows on the lawns outside the Jonkershuis Constantia restaurant. Click here to see the photos that Herman Agenbag took of this special day.
The really useful WEDDING BOOK for South Africa
If you are newly-engaged and feeling all at sea, wondering where to start, we suggest you invest in a copy of The really useful WEDDING BOOK for South Africa. (It also makes an ideal engagement gift!) The book, which contains everything you need to know when planning a wedding, is available from leading bookstores in South Africa, or directly from Celebration House in Claremont, Cape Town. We are pleased to advise that it can be purchased online as well - visit www.celebrationhouse.co.za.
We are also delighted that the guide is now being used by Damelin students for their event-planning course. To read what others have to say about the book, click here.

Celebration House Top Tip
Much has been written (movies have even been made) about brides who have dressed their bridesmaids in unflattering styles. Be that as it may, trying to find an outfit that is acceptable to several women of varying sizes and colouring is not an easy task. One way to get around this is to use different shades of fabric that blend, and to allow a little leeway in their choice of style, so that the outfits are not completely identical.
We look forward to seeing you soon! Until next time
Best wishes
