Interview with S.T.A.R invitations

How did your interest in designing wedding stationery develop?
I have always enjoyed being a part of a special occasion and love interacting with people. Designing wedding stationery allows me to do both.

When and how did your business begin?
I started by helping a friend design her wedding stationery. From then on, various people began approaching me to help design theirs, and it all snowballed from there. I have been in business for approximately 2 ½ years.

What do you regard as the current trends in wedding stationery design?
Card design is moving towards cleaner lines and slicker finishes. People tend to choose metallics over handmade papers. Classical colours remain the most popular for wedding stationery, with vibrant, funky colours being chosen most often for 21st parties and other events.

Is there a particular style of wedding stationery you specialise in or particularly enjoy creating?
I really enjoy creating elegant contemporary cards.

Describe the most elaborate, interesting or just plain over-the-top wedding stationery you have created.
I once created a card for an English couple who got married on a game farm. The card had a African theme and was made of handmade paper, decorated with guinea fowl feathers and gold wax paw-prints. The invitation was wrapped in corrugated card.

Have you created wedding stationery for any well-known personalities?
Selbourne Boom, rugby player

Any interesting anecdotes you would like to relate?
On the same subject - not being a big sports fan, I did not recognise Selbourne Boom's name. I felt really silly when he walked into my office and everyone had to tell me who he was!

How would you describe your philosophy with regard to your business?
My philosophy is to give clients exactly what they want and to help them create stationery that will complement their wedding theme. I always strive to provide a great service.

How far in advance should one book your services?
Typically, a month ahead of the date on which you want to mail the invitations is preferable, but I have been known to help clients at short notice! The months leading up to spring and summer are of course busier, so a longer lead time is always preferable.

What is your top tip for prospective brides and grooms?
Relax, have fun and enjoy the wedding experience!
